We just got back from the Hurricane Ike evacuation. In times like these, it’s easy to be ungrateful and whiny, especially for me. Yesterday was our first full day back in the apartment, and I decided to write a Thankful List. I was amazed when it stretched to 4 front-and-back pages! Here are some of the highlights:
1. Our evacuation was extremely smooth. We were never parked in traffic, and we found a safe place to land (Temple, TX). When Houston evacuated for Rita, there was mass pandemonium and even violence. Our evac was peaceful, and everyone on the road (well, most of them) were friendly and courteous. Unusual for Houston drivers!
2. I was not pregnant or nursing a newborn. That would have been a nightmare. Jocelyn was very good throughout all the long car trips, and she ate at the big table with us, since her high chair was too big to bring along. She slept fairly well, even though she was in our room the whole time.
3. We never had to live without power or running water. The insurance company covered the first 5 nights in the hotel, while Seabrook was closed, and we were with friends for the balance of the time. At our friends’ home, we hadour own room and bathroom, access to laundry (THANK YOU) and a refrigerator, and Jocelyn loved playing with a bunch of “new” toys. God was so good to even think of our daughter’s comfort and safety. When you realize that thousands of homes are still without power in the Houston area alone, it gives you pause…
To be continued!
